Smallmouth in Oct.

Morning folks.  I have a friend visiting from up north this coming weekend and would like to take him out on Simcoe. Since I have zero experience fishing on the lake at this time of year, I was curious if I should be targetting smallmouth or perch?  Second, which general area would you suggest for SM: Cooks Bay, mouth of Kempenfelt, western shoreline?  And third, is jigging with live bait or trolling some rapalas the better option?  Thanks for any information. I appreciate the help.

I have had some luck fishing for bass in the late fall in Kempenfeldt Bay trolling in about 20-30 ft of water with shad rap Rapalas in xxxxxxxxx along the north shore.

Live bait is killer this time of year if you wanna go that route... although I'm not sure who has large minnows in stock

I am not sure they are there yet as I usually target them after the lake flips but I am probably wrong as I usually only target bass in late October early November. Never had much luck when the water was still warm.

I agree ... once the water turns over the bite seems to start again.

Lake Simcoe has so many variables when it comes to catching Bass.

This Satuday, the Barrie Bassmasters will be hosting thier Annual Lake Simcoe Open.  It will be interesting to see what weights come in.
Weigh in is at 3:00 pm at the City Marina.

I don't fish this tournament because their are so many anglers that fish Simcoe regularly - I am really just donating money to the pot! LOL

Water temp in Cooks Bay was around 60 degrees yesterday. So no.

Water temp in Cooks Bay was around 60 degrees yesterday. So no.

On Sunday, Kemp temps were 60-63 F.  Caught a couple bass in 15-20 ft, and was off the water by 11:00 am before the winds picked up too much.

Monday it was 59 degrees.  Marked a bunch, my father in law landed a giant way out in about 55 feet.  We were drifting and got out deep and I’m ready to move the boat in shallow when he shouts “fish!”
