Fingerling , perfect dipping sauce size.

Last week ... over the course of 4 nights we stocked over 140,000 whitefish fingerlings into Lake Simcoe.  They are strategically placed near deep-water habitat where there will be minimal predation from top predators as they head there after release from shore.   Stocking is done at night to avoid predation from fish-eating waterfowl or gulls and turns as well. Stocked whitefish come from MNRF's Whitelake Hatchery.

Lake trout stocking is done in the spring and upwards of 100,000 are currently being raised at the Chatsworth Hatchery from last fall's egg collection, for release into Lake Simcoe Spring 2021. Last fall ~240 lake trout were tagged (Floy tag below the dorsal fin) and more will be tagged again this fall during egg collections, so anglers who catch a tagged trout are asked to call the phone number on it and report the unique tag ID number, date of catch, general location, depth size of fish and if it was released or harvested.

Thanks Wil for explaining to us where the whities and trout are raised and how they are released.  A great many should survive to provide countless hours of fishing pleasure for many fisherpersons in several years time.

Yes - the stocked fish (whitefish and lakers) will be clipped.

Confirmed ... yes all stocked whitefish and lake trout will have at least one fin clipped (Right or left ventral or right pectoral - some years in tandem with the small adipose fin up top. ) Besides telling MNRF staff and anglers that what they are seeing is a stocked fish, these clips can determine what year the fish was stocked.

Great news! Although the last few years, we've seen more & more "Naturals"! Lakers numbers need to be bumped up!
