Crazy cold here in Orillia. Watching the lake freeze over coffee
I spend 250 days a year on the water and I still feel I'm missing Time on the Water.

Today has me excited in terms of making ice.

Is there much snow up there?

And will you be testing the ice on Cooch before the weekend?

Yes thanks for the updates everyone. Anybody know how the ice is at VB? Was thinking about taking a walk Sunday for some early season perch with spud in hand.

It's still a little early for testing. If there is no more snow and another freezing night I might walk out and do a preliminary test

There is an 1in of ice for 100ft on the gilford side. Decent waves on cooks, let’s hope lady simcoe stays calm for the next 48hrs and locks up the surface.

To be clear Not safe, not even close. Couple Yonge bucks from the city happen to be out walking on the ice  rod in hand, scary how uninformed some people are...

They wha?

Jesus. I hope they are ok.

Actually what I really hope is they get a soaker and a scare 10 ft from shore but that they survive.

Vb is not safe ice .

There is no safe ice.
Still a few open spots out there and it's not frozen all the way to the point.

I was in 2ftw and it was a crummy 2 layer ice with slush under it. Give it some time

I'll be checking it better tomorrow late afternoon before dark and venturing a little further  after some more cold.
We will see what happens.

Thanks for the updates. Hopefully it puts on 1-2" per day for the next few days and it'll be good to start walking on. Fished local ice today (Mitchell's bay) and found 2-4" of clear ice and dirty water, got off before the heavy snow started.

Gino thanks for the update .. it's looking  great for Dec 13th . It's only going to get better from here . I may try out willow this year it has been  8 to 10 years since  I fished there.
The last time there was the absolute worst day on the ice by far for me . White outs without a gps or compass ended up walking from the willow huts to the jp huts thinking  I was going to shore in a foot of snow lol. That's the day I met peal and I thought he was crazy one going the wrong direction while he looked at his compass with his head down looking at his compass  lol. I should of left with the smart guy lol. Lessons definitely learned that day and many many unforgettable kms.

Play safe everyone.

The Radar looks nice for Cooch but Simcoe has a long way to go.
Little warmer temps for Monday but night time lows are still cold.

Thank you for the pics and updates on the east side Fishfood... ;D

I really hope that pack ice freezes and stays as it is cause last cpl years it's been a tad deep and dangerous, especially when there's an inch of snow on it

cheers

Kemp Bay in Barrie was nothing but a big wall of steam at 8am this morning. It,s going to take another week of this cold temps to get it right. No wind too.

We are going to need some very cold nights to lock it up. I'll go and test a little tomorrow and see how its progressing.

Thanks again for the updates everybody, we're pretty well snowed in here now (lake st clair) and walking will be rough. Almost a foot of soft powder ontop of the 3-4" of ice we had. Sure would be nice to get a few perch before Christmas.

Now here is vb Dec 14th 2017 first guy fishing yea fishing lol. Not very far off shore I wouldn't get your hopes up to fast.

JUST beyond that guy you can see the transition on the ice . That is THIN ICE ...not sure how thick it is there is probably a reason for why he stopped there . The cops were there when I turned on  the road I knew someone was out there they pulled out just before I got there. I'm sure they will be back there trying to stop people never had time to check the ice today. So I can't tell you ice thickness.

Play safe
